Feel Lighter. Glow Brighter. Refresh & Recharge.

(From Leigh-Ann’s deck, while sitting in the sun getting her Vitamin D levels up)

There’s a morning in September – you can’t predict which one – when you walk outside and the air has changed.

I notice it before I notice anything else. Something in the smell. Warmer, greener, wetter – at least for those of us in Jo’burg.

Summer’s coming.

And something in us responds to that. We open windows. We walk further. We want salad instead of stew. Which makes complete sense, because winter genuinely changed how we’ve been living. We moved less. We drank less water. We ate heavier meals, often later in the day. None of it dramatic – just a couple months of small shifts that add up.

So, this newsletter isn’t about six weeks to a summer body. Your body doesn’t need to be “earned” before summer.

But after one too many months of winter, most of us could do with a reset – not to fix anything, just to feel better.

Three steps. Nothing extreme. Let’s get into it.

STEP 01: FEEL LIGHTER

Weight management · Healthy lifestyle

Winter often brings heavier meals, later eating and less fibre. You don’t need to undo any of that – you just need to shift the rhythm.

Start here: Move your protein earlier.

Most of us eat very little protein at breakfast and a larger amount at dinner. Shifting some of that protein earlier in the day can be a simple, effective change.

It can support steadier energy and appetite through the day, while also helping you meet your protein needs and preserve muscle.

Aim for a proper protein source at breakfast – eggs, Greek yoghurt*, cottage cheese or leftover chicken.

Then:

  1. Bring fibre back up gradually. Spring produce is arriving – asparagus, peas, berries, green beans. Increase intake slowly to avoid bloating, and drink more water as you do.
  2. Eat your bigger meals earlier. A lighter dinner may support better sleep, particularly if you tend to eat heavily or very late. Better sleep can also make appetite regulation easier the next day.
  3. Move because it feels good, not to burn something off. The evenings are lighter and the mornings are warmer. A 20-minute walk after dinner can support blood sugar control, digestion and sleep, without turning movement into a form of punishment.

Takeaway

Feeling lighter doesn’t come from seeing a lower number on a scale. It comes from how you feel at 5pm, after a day of work and eating has already gone by.

*P.S. A Greek yoghurt I’ve been enjoying lately: Lancewood Fat Free Greek Yoghurt

I love how creamy and thick it is. It contains 8 g of protein per 150 g serving.

STEP 02: GLOW BRIGHTER

Skin · Hair · Nails

Many months of dry air, hot showers and less fresh produce can show up in your skin, hair and nails. Skin can get dull, hair can shed more and nails can split. Some of this can be addressed from the inside out.

Start here: Don’t just buy your collagen – eat it.

Your body makes collagen constantly, and Vitamin C is essential for collagen formation. Before reaching for a collagen supplement, make sure you’re getting the nutrients your body needs to make collagen in the first place.

Get adequate Vitamin C daily from real food: citrus, guava, red pepper, kiwi, broccoli, strawberries.

Then:

  1. Omega-3 for the skin barrier. Sardines, mackerel, salmon, walnuts and flaxseed. If your skin has been particularly dry or irritated, make sure you’re getting enough omega-3-rich foods.
  2. Zinc for repair. Pumpkin seeds, eggs, legumes, red meat. Zinc drives wound healing and skin turnover, and low intake is common.
  3. If your hair is shedding, check your iron. Low iron stores can contribute to hair shedding and thinning, so if you’re experiencing unexplained hair loss, it’s worth checking your iron status. Ask your doctor or dietitian whether an iron profile, including ferritin, is appropriate rather than checking haemoglobin alone. If your results show low iron stores, your healthcare professional can advise you on whether supplementation is appropriate and which form and dose to use.
  4. Water intake shows on skin before anywhere else.

(But more on that in the next step)

Takeaway

Glowing skin and hair are built in the kitchen, not only from your bathroom vanity!

STEP 03: REFRESH & RECHARGE

Hydration · Immunity · Overall wellbeing

This is the one most people skip – and the one that can change how you feel fastest.

Start here: Fix your hydration before anything else.

In colder weather, thirst can be less noticeable, so it’s easy to drink less than you need. You may notice this as fatigue, headaches, poor concentration, dry skin or sluggish digestion.

Use six to eight glasses a day as a starting point, and increase your intake with heat, exercise and other factors that increase fluid needs.

Do not wait to feel thirsty before drinking water.

Then:

  1. Pay attention to your Vitamin D. Vitamin D is worth giving a little more attention to, particularly if you spend little time outdoors or have previously had low levels.

If you’ve been feeling unusually flat, speak to your doctor or dietitian about whether testing is appropriate. If your levels are low, supplementation can be guided by your blood results and individual needs.

I like Vitamin D in spray form for convenience. Try Phytomist® Vitamin D3 & K2 Spray as one option. The number of sprays should be guided by your Vitamin D blood levels.

  2. Feed your gut before allergy season. Spring pollen is coming. A diverse, fibre-rich diet supports a healthy gut microbiome, while fermented foods such as yoghurt, kefir and sauerkraut can be an easy addition.
  3. Watch the temperature swing. Warm days, cold evenings, and all of a sudden everyone is catching a bug like it’s July again. Vitamin C, zinc and adequate sleep all support normal immune function – particularly useful as routines and seasons change.
  4. Let the light shift your rhythm.

Lighter evenings and earlier mornings can make this one of the easiest times of year to reset your sleeping patterns. Get outside in the morning if you can, and work in a little extra movement before it gets dark. This should also support more restful sleep at night.

Takeaway

Most people chase energy with caffeine when the answer is simply to pay attention to hydration, sunlight and sleep.

Start with one step

You don’t need to do all three at once.

Pick the one that sounds most like you right now, give it two weeks and notice how you feel.

And if you’d like a little extra support alongside this, The IV Bar has drips designed to complement each step. There’s the Weight Assist and Detox drips to feel lighter, the Skin Radiance and Biotin drips to glow brighter, and the Jetfuel and Glutamine drips to refresh and recharge.

Ask your IV Bar nurse which option may be right for you.

P.S. The IV Bar is actually running a stunning competition at the moment: Simply let them know what your summer goal is, and you could win a game-changing hamper worth R3,100.

A final thought

A reset isn’t about undoing winter or making up for it.

It’s about noticing what shifted and choosing one thing to bring back. That’s usually enough.

Here’s to open windows, longer evenings and feeling like yourself again,
